Investigators said one police officer vomited three times during the rescue of an elderly women who had been neglected by her son in Gwinnett County, Georgia.
Maintenance workers with the Buford Housing Authority were working outside the 88-year-old woman’s home on South Street and were unaware anyone lived inside. Investigators said they heard noise coming from the bedroom and saw motion from someone underneath the covers on a bed.
The workers called 911, and police responded to find the woman in deplorable condition.
“There’s neglect here,” said a police officer on video from his body camera. “The whole room smells like fecal matter.”
The woman had bed sores and was lying in her own urine and waste, according to police. She was very frail and appeared not to have eaten for a long period of time.
Paramedics took the woman to a hospital where she received treatment.
They called the woman’s son, 56-year-old Tony Sherman, to the home and interviewed him.
“She said she never ever wanted to go to a nursing home and so I’m doing the best I can,” Sherman said to the police.
