DeWanda Wise, who plays a pilot named Kayla in Jurassic World Dominion, says in an interview with Comicbook.com that her character is bisexual and that it’s an important trait, regardless of if the person has a partner.

“It’s important, and it’s also important to me that we continue to expand the conversation beyond looking for the kiss,” Wise said.

She goes on to indicate she’s approaching Kayla’s sexuality as a matter of inherent, steady-state identity – as in, it’s a part of who she is no matter the circumstance.

“If you’re queer, you’re queer … I said what I said,” Wise added. “All the time. You don’t turn it off. It doesn’t matter if your partner’s in the cockpit with you. It just is a statement of being.”

The Jurassic series has gone decades without even addressing LGBT representation, aside from when Fallen Kingdom came close to making Cowboy Bebop actress Danielle Pineda’s paleo-vet Zia an open lesbian. That aspect of her didn’t make it into the film and ultimately served no purpose to the story.

As Wise’s Kayla is palling around with Owen Grady (Chris Pratt) and Clarie Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard), she will more than likely be too busy running from ravenous prehistoric beasts for her sexual preferences to matter either.

Hollywood is adding LGBT representation and content to every franchise as of late so Dominion’s director Colin Trevorrow might be following a mandate or simply going along with the crowd.

And if this doesn’t mean much in the scheme of things yet again then it could be a while before any sort of payoff is seen from the development of Kayla’s character, assuming it’s really that important to anybody.

Trevorrow is liable to end his Jurassic arc here and that sounds like the promise he is making with the added caveat he will pass the buck to the next generation.

“People were just conditioned to believe that nothing ever ends anymore,” he explained to Comicbook. “What I get excited about is knowing what some young filmmaker envisions, like what new ideas.”

He continued, “I, at one point, had a very clear vision for where we could take this and what this could be. And I laid that out to Steven Spielberg and he gave me this opportunity and I would love to be able to give that opportunity to some little kid who’s playing with dinosaur toys in a sandbox right now. And he or she has a vision and I want to hear it.”

Producers have the ambition to take Jurassic Park into the future but no projects beyond Dominion have been made official. It could be the end of the line after the film releases on June 10th.
